I need a new heat pump. Now what?
When your comfort consultant from Jamison Heating & Cooling Services advises you on replacing your existing heat pump. Here’s what you can expect.
A Manual J Load Calculation will be performed to attain correctly sized equipment. Our contractor will take a series of measurements, including:
- The thickness of the insulation.
- The number, size, and efficiency of your windows.
- The number and type of doors.
- Your home’s total square footage.
- The square footage of the floor over a crawl space or basement.
- How many people reside in your home.
- The number of rooms that lack ductwork but need heating/cooling.
- Ceiling heights
- And whether your home includes a basement or is built on a slab.
The heating and cooling needs significantly differ based on these calculations alone. Jamison Heating & Cooling Services will sell you and install the correct heat pump model based on these measurements. You will receive an estimate of the costs and can discuss financing options.
Heat Pump Installation Day
Jamison Heating & Cooling Services will call you once the technicians are headed to your home. Plan on reviewing the job specifications with the lead installer. The Jamison Heating & Cooling Services team will begin laying down floor protection and getting tools and equipment in place.
Steps toward your new heat pump installation
Jamison Heating & Cooling Services will begin the removal of your old heat pump by eliminating the existing heat pump refrigerant. As per EPA regulations, a recovery machine along with a recovery tank will be used to safely remove the refrigerant. The electrical wiring is then disconnected. Once all the existing connections have been safely removed, the old heat pump can be removed.
Outdoor prep area
Jamison Heating & Cooling Services may replace the pad on where your new heat pump will sit. The ground will be leveled, and any bushes or debris will be cleared before setting up the new pad.
Removing the Old Indoor Unit Evaporator Coil
The evaporator coil sits above the furnace, though sometimes it will sit below it. It is the other part of your heat pump system. It connects refrigerant lines. The next part of your system is the sheet metal plenum. This must be disconnected before the new coil can be installed. Disconnecting it can be complicated depending on how much access space is available where your indoor units are located. The existing refrigerant line set (a set of two copper lines through which the refrigerant travels from the outdoor condenser, then back into the indoor evaporator coil) can be removed.
The final indoor step in connecting your new heat pump is to connect and seal it to the sheet metal plenum.
Line Sets and Added Wiring
The existing refrigerant line set can be removed. This is a set of two copper lines through which the refrigerant travels from the outdoor condenser, then back into the indoor evaporator coil. The Jamison Heating & Cooling Services technician will braze the copper line set and service valves. This step is critical to ensure the copper line set, the filler rod, and the service valve are melted together for a tight, leak-free connection.
Installing New High- and Low-Voltage Wiring
For the heat pump system to operate, the high- and low-voltage wiring must be reconnected. The heat pump stops working correctly when the temperature is below a certain point. It may freeze and must be told when to go into defrost mode. Otherwise, it will keep running. This, by the way, is one of the tell-tale signs your old unit is beginning to fail as it continues to cycle.
Time to Test Your New Heat Pump
Once your system is completely installed and ready to operate, the startup and commissioning process is performed. Your contractor will start your system and run it for 15-20 minutes. This allows the refrigerant to flow through the system.
Commissioning your heat pump will take from 45 minutes to 2 hours
During this time, the Jamison team will test the heating, cooling, and defrost settings. This final step helps satisfy the manufacturer’s warranty requirements. Commissioning is the only way to confirm how efficiently your system is running.
Clean Up and Leave You To Enjoy Your New Heat Pump
The old equipment and any packaging from the new system will be loaded up and taken away. Floor protection and any debris removed. Your contractor will review safety, maintenance, warranty, and instructions on operating your new heat pump. Jamison Heating & Cooling Services will explain how to control your thermostat. If using a smart thermostat, they will program a customized comfort schedule along with you.
