D.W Payne founded Payne® in 1914 in Los Angeles. Together with his son, Payne built a gravity-type furnace – a heating unit that uses gravity to warm a building. In 1933, the company introduced its first forced-air, down-discharge furnace.
Over a decade later, In 1945, Payne® merged with Bryant and Day & Night to form Affiliated Gas Equipment Inc. (AGE). AGE was then acquired by Carrier in 1955 and made Payne the ‘P’ in BDP Co. In 1996, Payne separated from BDP and formed Payne Heating. Today, Payne® is owned by United Technologies Corporation (UPC), which acquired Carrier in 1979.
