Learn 5 Points about the Benefits of Adding an Air Purifier to your HVAC System

Even though a high-performance HVAC unit with quality air filters is helpful for improving Indoor Air Quality at home, adding an air purifier to your HVAC system is an idea worth considering. Whole-house air purifiers are more effective than portable ones or cheap pleated air filters, as they use high-efficiency mechanical filters, UV light or electrostatic charge to trap and get rid of allergens, pollutants and toxins.

In our previous blog, we learned about air ventilation and why it’s important in 3 points. This week, we believe it’s important to talk about why air purifiers are essential for work and household systems, especially when considering there’s still an ongoing pandemic and many people are either going back to the office or working from home.

Essentials about Air Cleaners and Air Purifiers

HVAC systems have air filters that work trapping indoor air pollutants and helping the unit to keep running properly, guaranteeing energy efficiency. But on their own, they aren’t enough to ensure good indoor air quality.

That’s where Air Purifiers come in. As their name implies, their task is to purify the breathing air at home.

What indoor air pollutants do air purifiers catch?

Air purifiers mainly catch or eliminate small particulates that are able to avoid standard air filters, such as the following:

  • Mold
  • Dust mites
  • Tobacco smoke
  • Pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Cleaning products
  • Pesticides
  • Tiny particles
  • Bacteria and virus

Who benefits the most from air purifiers?

Indoor air pollutants can pose a serious health risk, especially for people with allergies, asthma or other respiratory conditions, as well as for very young and elderly populations. HVAC air purifiers will help reduce symptoms by removing airborne contaminants.

If you or a loved one have severe reactions to indoor allergens or particulates, an air purification system is a sound investment, as the unit will eliminate airborne toxins from your home.

How do whole-home air purifiers do the job?

A whole-house air purifier installs directly into your existing HVAC system. When the unit is working, the air purifier removes pollutants, cleaning the air.

Though there’s a variety of types of air cleaners and each purifies the air in a different way, all of them follow a general pattern.

When you turn on your air conditioner or heating unit, fans bring air into the vents. As the air flows through the purification device, airborne pollutants are eliminated. Then the air circulates back and is blown into each room in your house. This process is different from a portable unit that only works in the specific space where it’s placed and its capacity is measured by square footage.

Which are the types of Air Purifiers available?

There are different types of HVAC air filtration and purifying systems. It’s worth consulting a professional HVAC contractor to help you choose the best for your home.

  • Ultraviolet: UV technology can be used in tandem with a HEPA air purifier. With the use of rays of ultraviolet light, tiny microorganisms like bacteria, viruses and other airborne pathogens are eliminated.
  • HEPA: These filters use High Energy particulate Air Filters (HEPA). They’re highly effective in trapping airborne particulates. Not every air conditioning system is compatible with HEPA filters, so it’s important to check beforehand.
  • Electrostatic Air Purifiers: This type of Air Purifier cleans the air with static electricity. An electrostatic charge is produced by air flowing through a network of static-absorbing fibers, and the static charge traps airborne contaminants in the particulate air filters.
  • Carbon Activated Filters: If you’re mainly interested in eliminating volatile organic compounds (VOCs), smoke and bad odors, this type of air filter contain an absorbent filtration system to trap them.
  • Ionizing Air Purifiers: An ionizing air purifier produces charged particles that capture contaminants in the air. As more of the airborne particulates stick together, they become too heavy to remain in the air, so they either fall to the floor or are captured by the filtration system.

Whichever air purifier you choose, it’s important to give it regular maintenance to ensure its effectiveness. Disposable filters need to be replaced and reusable ones require regular cleaning.

If you have concerns about poor Indoor Air Quality and would like to install an Air Purifier in your HVAC system to ensure clean & fresh air at home, our professional technicians should be able to help you pick the system that’s best suited for your place.
